The Values in Color

Paitning the Pond

In the style of Matisse

Matisse is considered the father of abstract art. He was primarily not a painter, he liked to draw things. So in his paintings, he outlined or drew in his objects when he painted them. Matisse also was fond of patterns and vibrant colors. He simplified and altered the real life things he saw in his paintings. He did this by adding or enhancing colors that were not necessarily there. Matisse has taught me to see more colors than i used to. I was connected to Matisse because his paintings are basically sketches and he used his imagination to enhance colors that he sees in reality. I love his use of bright colors and his ability to bring life to each painting and i'm trying to learn how to paint objects in the distance. For example, he doesn't paint the individual leaves of trees, instead he paints blotches and the areas of where the leaves are.

Paint it Black

The goals of this project was to reflect colors that show up in black objects. Through this project i was trying to learn how to use colors to add depth to a simple black color. I accomplished this by mixing my complementary colors and adding hues of other colors to create unique blacks. My painting is about reflected colors and simplifying art to make it more appealing. The most difficult challenge I had to face was creating accurate colors and how to dull them down to reflect from my black mug. Although it took a few tries to get the correct colors, it was easy to scrape off the paint and start over with new colors i made. I think my painting really works in the fold of the fabric in the background and in the white flower where i was able to capture the colors found in the white as well. I have learned how to make reflections seem not so scary to paint, and i hope to bring that into my next artwork. In Jillian's artwork i learned how she was able to simplify that crystal ball that i thought looked challenging to paint. If i had a do-over of this project, i would try to make my black pearls look better by adding more color blocks to them and having them not just look grey. My favorite part about my work is how you can see the stripes in the background go up and out of the page because it adds to my composition.

Easter Eggs

The goal of this project was to try to make the eggs really look round in my painting. I accomplished this by paying attention to the different colors produced by each shadow. Also, by having a layer of red underneath my painting, the warm tone was able to bring all my pieces together. Composition and shadows were a major part of this project because the placement of my objects created unique shadows that made the eggs look 3D.The most difficult part for me was getting the correct shape of the egg (not almond), and the colors to put in the cracks that are in the middle of each egg. However, there were parts of my paining that also work nicely. For example, the reflection of the pink egg in my purple egg really added some depth to my painting. In this project I continued to learn the importance of simplicity and painting quickly. Working with longer brush strokes simplified my work which gave it a nice look. I liked how Jillian added the chicken into her composition because it matched the theme and made her artwork more interesting. If I could redo this, one thing I would change is the shape of my pink egg because it is still a little pointed at the tip and I'm just now noticing. I think the best park of my work was getting the correct colors on my egg and the placements of the lights and darks to give them a rounder look.
